It rained on Carmel’s homecoming parade Friday night, but sunny skies prevailed on Saturday afternoon after another round of severe weather forced a postponement for the second time in three weeks.
Carmel’s defense created a different kind of storm in a 24-0 victory over North Central.
The shutout was the third in as many weeks for the Greyhounds, who last gave up a score to Center Grove in week three. North Central had an opportunity inside the Greyhound 5-yard line early in the 4th quarter, but the defense kept its scoreless streak alive with a stand on 4th and goal from the 2-yard line. The Carmel defense has now given up only 48 points to opponents through six games.
The defense even scored — Greyhound linebacker Donald Patterson ran back an interception 23 yards for a touchdown.
The wind was a factor, particularly in the second half. North Central failed to complete a pass after halftime after Michael Loggan completed 5 out 11 passes in the first half. The Panthers moved Jeff Harris to the quarterback position in the 3rd quarter, and every play that Harris ran resulted in a run.
Carmel’s John Lampe finished the game with 11 completions in 18 attempts with two touchdown passes; one each to Danny Dunn and Joe Scheffer. Most of those completions came before halftime.
The Greyhounds managed only 70 yards rushing after amassing over 1,200 yards through their first five games. Darius Latham of North Central lived up to his billing as one of the area’s top defenders as he was in the Carmel backfield for much of the game.
Carmel, ranked number one in 5A, moves to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in MIC conference play. North Central falls to 1-5 on the year, and 1-3 in MIC play. The Greyhounds will have their annual showdown with Warren Central next Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Warriors are currently ranked #7 in 5A.
