November high school football in Indiana is for the best teams in the state.
The sectional finals, regional, semi-state and state championship games occur in November. Chatard is a team that plays in November nearly every year. The Trojans have a rich football tradition which includes eleven Class 3A and two Class 2A IHSAA state championships, including the last two 3A IHSAA titles.
Chatard’s tradition continued with a 49-9 win over Greensburg in the Class 3A regional final. Alex Kimack led the way with 260 yards and three touchdowns.
Greensburg came out of the locker room fired up and stopped Chatard on the first drive of the game, forcing a turnover on downs, making the Trojan sideline a bit tense. Greensburg’s offense took the field with a scheme that Chatard had not seen all year, a fusion of the wishbone and option, quick hand offs and fakes and pitches right at the line. The Pirates started driving running of big chunks of yards. Finally the Trojan D recognized how to stop it, push the line back and stay disciplined on their defensive assignments. Greensburg settled for a field goal, a-40 yarder.
Chatard started rolling on offense and then Pete Hartley, senior running back phenom, went down with a sprained foot. In came Kimack, and Chatard didn’t miss a beat. The junior had touchdown runs of 1, 6 and 53 yards.
Chatard’s QB Sam Neighbors threw for two touchdowns in the game, a 25-yard pass to senior Jack Busald and a 5-yard pass to junior tight end Henry Hill.
Joe Fagan, who dislocated his shoulder in last week’s game, returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown on his first return try in the third. Senior Eric Moore got some playing time at running back as well, and he found the end zone, too.
The Trojans will face Southern Gibson who overcame a 42-14 deficit to win 57-49 over Charlestown.
