Purdue’s Marve, Frankie Williams earn Big Ten honors

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue’s Robert Marve and Frankie Williams were recognized with player of the week honors by the Big Ten Conference after their performances in Saturday’s Old Oaken Bucket victory over Indiana. Marve was named the co-Offensive Player of the Week and Williams the Freshman of the Week. The honor is the first for Marve and the second of the season for Williams.
Marve, making his final start at Ross-Ade Stadium, completed 20 of 29 passes for a career-high 348 yards and four touchdowns. He had scoring passes of 8, 19, 73 and 26 yards and became the first Purdue QB to throw for more than 300 yards in a game since Joey Elliott on Nov. 14, 2009. He directed a Purdue offense that amassed 558 yards of total offense and averaged 8.0 yards per play. Even on his lone mistake, a tipped-ball interception by IU’s Greg Heban, Marve raced 70 yards on a torn ACL in his left knee to thwart a potential pick-six with a saving tackle along the sideline.
Williams recorded six tackles, all solo, returned an interception 33 yards to help set up a Boilermaker offensive touchdown and broke up a career-high three passes in the 56-35 Old Oaken Bucket victory. Williams’ effort was part of a day that saw the Boilermakers force four turnovers that led to four touchdowns for the Purdue offense.
