Some great action last week with the Marion County Tournament, and a top-ten matchup to boot.  The City Tournament heats up this week, along with a matchup of last year’s 4A state finalists.

Recap from last week:

Park Tudor 77, Pike 76, Marion County Championship

Trevon Bluett showed that both he and his team belong with the big boys in knocking off previously undefeated and 4A #1 Pike.  Bluett led Park Tudor with 30 points, but it was Austin Shelton that gave them much needed help by contributing 23 to the effort.  Zavier Turner led Pike with 24, with Taishaun Johnson and Jordan Pickett adding 19 each.

Carmel 54, Kokomo 46

Michael Volovic continued his strong play of late leading the Greyhounds with 22 points, but it was Ryan Cline’s 3-point shooting and James Volovic’s contributions that made the difference.  Tayler Persons and LaBradford Sebree led previously unbeaten Kokomo with 17 points apiece.

Here are the games to watch this week:

#3 Carmel at #2 Pike (Wednesday)

Carmel is coming off of a grueling week where they defeated Cathedral and Kokomo.  Michael Volovic has taken control of this team and is getting it done in many phases of the game, including three point shooting.  Pike suffered a tough loss to Park Tudor in the County Tournament; Zavier Turner led the way with 24 points.  Pike’s previous loss prior to that…in the state finals last year to Carmel.

North Central at Lawrence North

North Central is 7-4, but all of the Panthers’ losses have been to quality teams.  They are certainly capable with Eron Gordon and Darius Latham of playing with anyone in the state.  Lawrence North has had a resurgence at 9-2 after a sub-par year last season.  Purdue recruit Basil Smotherman leads LN.

Indianapolis City Tournament

The tournament tips of Tuesday; #1 Tech and Cathedral are the teams to watch in this one.  Tech has 2-10 Manual in its first round matchup, while Cathedral opens with 5-4 Howe.  The top four teams in the tournament are seeded, so these two teams would meet in the finals; they met in the first round a year ago.  Cathedral won that contest on their way to the City championship.  Collin Hartman is back for Cathedral, which makes the Irish a formidable foe for the Titans.
