Santa Clara defeats Purdue 86-83 in CBI tournament
Purdue’s rally came up short in an 86-83 loss to Santa Clara in the second round of the CBI Tournament on Monday night.
The Boilermakers trailed by 11 in the second half and 80-73 with 1:21 remaining before Ronnie Johnson scored on a layup and converted a three-point play to make it 80-78.
Santa Clara’s Kevin Foster, who led all scorers with 34 points and eight assists, responded with a 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining, and Purdue never regained the lead.
Ronnie Johnson led Purdue with 27 points, six assists and three steals. Terone Johnson had 22 points and five rebounds. The Brothers Johnson combined to make 19 of 43 shots, but the rest of the team made just 11 of 26. Purdue made just 1 of 11 3-pointers.
A.J. Hammons, Purdue’s up-and-down center, scored three points on 1-for-5 shooting. D.J. Byrd finished his final game as a Boilermaker with nine points on 1-for-6 shooting.
The Boilermakers finished the season with a 16-18 record. Santa Clara improved to 23-11.
