Fever F Tamika Catchings ties WNBA Player of the Week record

NEW YORK, July 22, 2013 – Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever and Elizabeth Cambage of the Tulsa Shock were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, July 15 through Sunday, July 21.
This marks the 19th time in her career that Catchings has been named Player of the Week, tying her for first all-time with Seattle’s Lauren Jackson. Catchings averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in the Fever’s two games last week, a 77-70 win over Washington at home on July 19, and a 65-52 road victory against the Mystics two days later. For the week, she ranked second in the East in points and assists per game and fourth in rebounding.
In the July 19 win over Washington, Catchings scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals. On July 21, she erupted for 23 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks for her 84th career double-double. The outburst came on her 34th birthday.
For Cambage, the second overall selection in the 2011 WNBA draft, the Player of the Week honor is the first of her career. Cambage’s 16.3 points, 2.0 assists and conference-leading 13.3 rebounds guided the Shock to a 3-0 week. Her two double-doubles helped Tulsa defeat its opponents by an average of 20 points, including two 27-point wins.
In an 86-59 victory over Seattle on July 17, Cambage scored 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds. On July 19, she scored another 13 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass in a 64-58 win over Connecticut. Cambage ended her week with a 23-point effort, adding 15 rebounds and three assists to defeat Atlanta 90-63.
Other candidates for WNBA Players of the Week were Atlanta’s Angel McCoughtry, Chicago’s Elena Delle Donne and Courtney Vandersloot and Indiana’s Shavonte Zellous in the East, as well as Los Angeles’ Nneka Ogwumike, Minnesota’s Lindsay Whalen and Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi in the West.
