Hoosiers: What’s Hot and What’s Cold

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Each week I’ll run down what’s hot and what’s cold with Indiana football. Here’s my take from Saturday’s 42-10 win over Bowling Green:IUlogo

HOT

Nate Sudfeld – Quarterback finishes 17 of 26 for 335 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, showing complete calm and command in the first start of his college career. He added a 1-yard touchdown run.

Cody Latimer/Kofi Hughes – Outstanding receiver tandem combines for 10 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

Nick Mangieri – Defensive lineman does a little bit of everything – sacking the quarterback, stuffing the run, batting down a pass, corralling an interception and making four tackles. His performance as both a tackle and end highlighted the Hoosiers’ solid efforts on third and fourth downs, where Bowling Green was 3 of 10 in the first half before finishing 10 of 26.

Running back duo – Tevin Coleman and Stephen Houston teamed for 32 carries and 284 yards, with Coleman scoring twice. Running behind a makeshift line, that was an eye-opening performance. They were like the real-life incarnation of the marauding bison seen in the pregame hype video shown at Memorial Stadium before kickoff.

The D – A bounce-back performance. Need we say more?

COLD

Quarterback race – Coach Kevin Wilson went almost exclusively with Sudfeld, a departure from the timeshare seen throughout spring and summer and even into the first two weeks of the regular season. Tre Roberson carried four times and was used for a handful of situational formations. Cameron Coffman, meanwhile, made a few handoffs and took a knee in garbage time. By all indications, the job is Sudfeld’s.

Health of the O-line – Left guard Bernard Taylor and right tackle Peyton Eckert sat out with injuries. Right guard Dan Feeney was already lost for the season.
