Third-quarter Thoughts: Michigan State 35, Indiana 21

At the end of the third quarter, the Hoosiers trail Michigan State 35 to 21 . Let’s touch on a few observations from the period.IUlogo

1. Wynn makes things happen. Shane Wynn burned Michigan State for a 53-yard pitch-and-catch over the middle from quarterback Nate Sudfeld. With good protection, Sudfeld patiently waited for Wynn to cut loose from safety Kurtis Drummond, playing man coverage on the play. Drummond was caught on his heels, as Wynn came right through his cushion and sprinted by the safety and was off to the races. Wynn made Darqueze Dennard and Drummond miss downfield, reaching the 7-yard line. On first-and-goal, Wynn lined up behind quarterback Tre Roberson and went in motion right as the ball was snapped. Roberson faked a handoff to Tevin Coleman and swung a backward pass to Wynn, who rushed in for a 2-yard score courtesy of great blocks from receivers Cody Latimer and Kofi Hughes. That pulled Indiana to 28-21.

2. Wynn makes history. Wynn, a receiver by trade, became the first player in Indiana history to score touchdowns receiving, rushing and on both kick and punt returns.

3. Langford plays well. Michigan State running back Jeremy Langford has been a big factor so far in the game and is responsible for four of the Spartans’ five touchdowns. Langford has been effective inside and on the perimeter, with added value as a pass catcher. The Hoosiers have not been able to stop the Spartans since early in the first quarter and Langford is a big reason.
