Third-quarter Thoughts: Indiana 49, Purdue 16

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – At the end of the third quarter, the Hoosiers lead Purdue 49 to 16 . Let’s touch on a few observations from the period.
1. The Hoosiers are still in control. The defense has dug in and the offense, unstoppable on third down, is moving the ball with absolute ease.
2. Starting Purdue middle linebacker Ruben Ibarra was replaced by usual starter Sean Robinson to open the second half. Robinson was questionable to play coming in because of concussion symptoms. But the switch back to normalcy didn’t produce any results. Robinson blitzed but couldn’t make a play on Ted Bolser’s 2-yard touchdown catch that made it 49-9.
3. A 13-yard run by quarterback Tre Roberson to open the quarter highlighted the different ways his diverse skills have burned Purdue in this one.
4. Danny Etling and DeAngelo Yancey, each a freshman, could develop a special connection over their time at Purdue.
5. While Shane Wynn hasn’t made as many big plays, he’s caught three receiving touchdowns to give him 11 on the season. Only five players in school history have more.
6. Yancey’s 10-yard touchdown catch on Purdue’s third drive of the quarter was a nice effort. The pass wasn’t perfect and the coverage was pretty good on the back line of the end zone. Yancey had to leap for it.
7. The Hoosiers substituted little-used junior Cameron Coffman at quarterback. Unfortunately for Coffman, he’s missed his only two throws and it appears Indiana is easing off the gas pedal a bit.
8. Akeem Hunt has been the lead ball carrier today, but Brandon Cottom is still contributing. His 70-yard catch-and-run was one of the big plays of the third quarter.
9. Danny Etling’s arm strength continues to impress. His effort on a 47-yard deep ball to DeAngelo Yancey, with a hard-charging rusher coming up the middle, was impressive.
