Purdue football coach Hazell fires assistants

Purdue head football coach Darrell Hazell announced Sunday that defensive coordinator Greg Hudson, offensive coordinator John Shoop and defensive tackles coach Rubin Carter will not return for the 2016 season.
Hudson, who also coached the defensive ends; Shoop, who also coached the quarterbacks; and Carter each just completed their third seasons under Hazell at Purdue.
“I appreciate the efforts of each of those guys over the last three years,” Hazell said. “They are quality men who are well respected by their players and their peers, and I am disappointed that things didn’t work out better. But I believe that in order to turn around this program, we need to make some significant changes and move in a different direction at those positions.”
The Boilermakers concluded the 2015 season Saturday with a loss to Indiana.
Athletic director Morgan Burke said recently that Hazell would be staying next year. Hazell’s importance goes way beyond just Purdue.
