ButlerLogoINDIANAPOLIS — Purdue fell short in its bid for its first 12-0 start since 2009-10 and first win ever in the five-year-old Crossroads Classic on Saturday.

The No. 9 Boilermakers were ranked higher but it was the 17th-ranked Butler Bulldogs who showed they’re arguably the best college basketball team in Indiana with a 74-68 win Saturday.

Butler is now 4-1 in the Crossroads Classic, the annual event rotating Big Ten rivals Indiana and Purdue against Butler and Notre Dame. IU’s win over the Irish earlier Saturday gave both those programs 3-2 records in the Classic.

Purdue fell to 0-5 in the event.

The Bulldogs (9-1) won despite a 2-point, 0-for-12 shooting night from Kellen Dunham, the Big East’s leading scorer. Roosevelt Jones (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Tyler Lewis (17 points) picked up the slack as Butler beat Purdue for the fifth straight time.

The Boilermakers (11-1) cut a 53-37 deficit to 70-68 when Kendall Stephens hit 1-of-2 FTs with 26.5 seconds left. But Lewis hit two FTs and Jordan Gathers hit a layup with 3 seconds left to seal the win.

“Listen, people are going to try to take Kellen out of the game, and give them credit for doing that today,” Butler coach Chris Holtmann said. “… Good teams find ways for other guys to step up and make plays.”

Andrew Chrabacz added 16 points for the Bulldogs.

Caleb Swanigan had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Boilers, who also got 11 points from A.J. Hammons.
