First Thoughts: Missouri 45, Indiana 28

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Quick thoughts on the Hoosiers’ 45-28 loss to Missouri at Memorial Stadium: IUlogo

How it happened: The Hoosiers were beaten repeatedly by big Missouri receivers, and the Tigers wound up with 623 yards of total offense, 283 through the air to their three best wideouts. The Hoosiers struggled on offense throughout, punting nine times, but managed to stay close by forcing three first-half turnovers. Greg Heban twice intercepted James Franklin and Tim Bennett recovered a Missouri fumble.

Turning point: Missouri defensive end Kony Ealy’s 49-yard interception return with 1:57 left before halftime gave Missouri a 28-14 lead and further frustrated Indiana’s offense.

Stat of the night: Dorial Green-Beckham finished with eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. He entered with nine catches and 134 yards in the first two games combined.

Under-the-radar star: Ian Simon. The nickelback filled in for injured Earnest Payton and held explosive Indiana tight end Ted Bolser to two catches for 10 yards.

Key subplot:  Hoosiers quarterback Nate Sudfeld was pulled early in the third quarter with his team down only 14 points. In relief, Tre Roberson was 8 of 14 for 148 yards and a touchdown and ran five times for 22 yards and another score. Sudfeld was 21 of 39 with three interceptions. Perhaps the quarterback spot isn’t settled after all.

What it means: The Hoosiers fall to 2-2, giving them a bye week to plot how they might split their eight Big Ten games in order to secure a bowl appearance. Indiana is home for Penn State on Oct. 5.
