Third-quarter Thoughts: Michigan 42, Indiana 40

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – At the end of the third quarter, the Hoosiers trail Michigan 42 to 40 . Let’s touch on a few observations from the period.
1. Big turnover sets up score. Fitzgerald Toussaint’s bouncing fumble on the opening drive of the quarter was recovered by Indiana’s Flo Hardin to set up first-and-goal from the 5. On third down, Tevin Coleman took a give from Nate Sudfeld 2 yards to pull Indiana to 28-24. That sent shockwaves through the Big House. Left guard Bernard Taylor cleared a seam for Coleman, who went in standing up.
2. Gallon of milk. Michigan receiver Jeremy Gallon ate his Wheaties, drank his milk, found his protein or whatever he needed to do this morning to get ready to destroy Indiana. That’s exactly what he’s done, with 13 catches for 343 yards and two touchdowns. Right after Indiana cut a 14-point deficit to four, Gallon bested Tim Bennett, Indiana’s top corner, for a 50-yard touchdown catch. Quarterback Devin Gardner aired it out perfectly and Bennett never had a chance. Gallon set a Big Ten single-game record for receiving yards with this magnificent performance.
3. Hoosiers show toughness. Indiana refused to die after falling behind 28-14 with 40 seconds left in the first half and has scored on six straight possessions. What an incredible game this has become, a duel between quarterbacks Tre Roberson and Devin Gardner. If anyone tells you they know what’s coming in the fourth, they’re lying. This one is a classic.
