Vikings of Distinction

The Vikings of Distinction Committee annually selects alumni, former faculty members, and individuals or organizations to be recognized and honored as Vikings of Distinction or a North Star for their outstanding achievements, mentorship and service to the community. The Committee also seeks financial support to annually provide scholarships to graduating seniors, and elevates awareness of Omaha North High Magnet School and its distinguished alumni.

2020-2022

Cliff Brunt, Class of 1992, Oklahoma City, OK

Cliff has covered a wide range of events for The Associated Press, including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Fours and the Indianapolis 500. The Tokyo Olympics in 2021 was Cliff’s third trip to cover the Games, following Beijing in 2008 and Rio in 2016. He is a Heisman Trophy voter who covers Oklahoma and Oklahoma State football. He also covers the Oklahoma City Thunder. Cliff worked at the Omaha World Herald from 1997 to 2003 as a sportswriter and news reporter. He was an adjunct professor who taught sports journalism at his alma mater, Creighton University, from 2001 to 2003. His community involvement has included providing Thanksgiving meals for families, coaching youth football and basketball, funding a journalism scholarship for an Omaha North High minority student, and facilitating Pen & Ink, an OPS program to steer students to writing.

Lester L. Carter, Jr., R.Ph., Class of 1949, St. Francis, WI

A pharmacist and herbalist, Lester Carter began his career after serving in the US Navy. Throughout his life, he made and provided natural products and formulas. He began working for a Rexall drug store in Omaha and continued with opening the Carter Drug Store (now Hyatt-Carter Herbal Shoppe) in Milwaukee, WI in 1968.The only African American-owned drugstore in Milwaukee, it is known for its healing remedies and is a hub for those seeking natural remedies based on sound science. In 2000, Dr. Carter received The Alumni Merit Award from Creighton University’s School of Pharmacy. In 2018, a street was named after Dr. Carter in honor of his positive impact on the Milwaukee community. In light of Dr. Carter’s passing at the age of 90 on January 31, 2022, Vikings of Distinction honored his achievements at the 2022 event.

Renee R. Franklin, MS, Class of 1989, Omaha, NE

Renee Franklin has served as the inaugural executive director of the Elementary Learning Centers at the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties since 2010. Among her many accomplishments in her non-profit and educational career are transforming a financially and organizationally struggling agency into an award-winning provider of social services, helping launch the Learning Community Center in both North and South Omaha, and developing and implementing educational solutions for children in poverty across 11 school districts in Douglas and Sarpy Counties. Renee was one of The Bloc’s 50 Over 50 honorees in 2021.

Llana M. Jones Smith, Class of 1966, Omaha, NE

Llana Jones Smith is a certified medical assistant who has long served her community, not only in a medical capacity but also in theater, music, and other areas. Her community service includes involvement with the Hope Center and serving as youth director at Salem Baptist Church. Her theater work includes helping churches develop drama departments, serving as drama director for Salem Baptist Church, and writing plays that have been performed in Omaha, Kansas City, Los Angeles and Atlanta. She has also served as a teacher at the National Gospel Music Workshop of America. Her daughter, Quiana M. Smith, was inducted into the Vikings of Distinction in 2016.

North Star: Roderick H. “Rick” Davis, Class of 1963

Rick Davis was president, founder, and owner of Davis Insurance and Bonds, as well as co-founder and director of Skytech, Inc. His outstanding work earned him invitations to the Governor’s Conference on Economic Development in 1984 and to the White House Conference on Small Business in 1986. He served as director of the Omaha Airport Authority (1987-1988) and was a life-long member of the NAACP. At Omaha North High, he was a standout athlete, lettering in three sports, and is remembered as one of North High’s legendary football “Four Norsemen.” Mr. Davis passed away in 1988.

2019

Lori James Bryant, M.D., Class of 1991, Cincinnati, OH

Dr. Lori Bryant is a Pediatrician/Director of Medical Informatics at Hyde Park Pediatrics in Cincinnati, Ohio. She holds degrees from Creighton University, Harvard University and Case Western Reserve College of Medicine. Her love for science, technology and serving others has been the inspiration for her success. She continues to be a career mentor in her community and beyond and a guest speaker at many events.

Tim Croshaw, Class of 1995, Los Angeles, CA

Tim is a Senior Set Designer who has played an integral part in collaborating on movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and numerous other film studios. He has also done set designs for many television series in major studios in Los Angeles, California. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Florida State University. His great collaboration skills and background in technology and art are key to what make Tim a highly successful set designer.

Phyllis Jones Watson, Class of 1976, Mitchellville, MD

Her undergraduate degree from Creighton University and her Law degree from the Creighton University School of Law led her to a more than 24-year career with The Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent, Supervisory Special Agent and Unit Chief. She is also an Adjunct/ Associate Professor at the University of Maryland’s College of Business and Professional Programs, Criminal Justice/Legal Studies. She serves as a mentor to others and a highly regarded conference speaker.

Robert M. Nelson, Class of 1962, Omaha, NE

Bob is managing partner of Nelson Murphy Insurance & Investments. He is a national leader in the Insurance and Financial Advising business and a featured speaker in all50 States. He was a commissioned Naval Intelligence Officer in the 1960’s, and continued to serve in the Navy Reserves retiring as a Captain in 1994. Bob was instrumental in setting up Omaha’s First Responders Foundation and serving on their Executive Committee. His life work has made him a highly respected businessman and community leader.

Faculty: Lee “Doc” Kallstrom, Ph.D., 1989-2015, Omaha, NE

Kallstrom was the leader of North’s Engineering Department and taught classes in design, technology, global studies in science and technology, civil engineering and architecture management. He and his students were instrumental in the development of the first renderings and the proposal to the OPS School Board of what is now North’s Engineering Building, the Haddix Center. Kallstrom and those students received the VOD Vision Award in 2011 for their efforts. He received the Alice Buffett Outstanding Teacher Award in 2012.

North Star: Scott Lee Bostwick, Class of 1979, 1961-2011

Scott attended UNK and then transferred to Nebraska Wesleyan University to receive an academic scholarship and play football. Upon graduation, he was asked to be Wesleyan’s Defensive  Coordinator and then held the same position at Western Washington University and Northwest Missouri State University where after 13 years, he became the head football coach. Through his outstanding coaching and enthusiasm, he helped develop the top NCAA Division II football program. The Northwest Missouri football dynasty has had three National Championships, two during Scott’s tenure. He was named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007. Scott was inducted into the Nebraska Wesleyan and the NW Missouri State University’s Halls of Fame. Coach Bostwick died unexpectedly on June 5, 2011. His memory lives on in those he coached, those he loved and so many who loved and admired him.

2018

Bob Churchich, Class of 1963, Boulder, CO 

Bob distinguished himself at North by lettering in four sports and quarterbacked the University of Nebraska’s 1964, 1965 and 1966 football teams. He went on to play pro baseball for the Atlanta Braves before going into business. He built a successful recreation equipment company in a four-state area and is a community leader in Boulder, Colorado.

Ronald L. Hamilton, M.D., Class of 1977, Pittsburgh, PA

Ron is an Associate Professor of Neuropathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He discovered, along with his former student, Bennet Omalu, M.D., Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease caused by sub-concussive brain trauma. He has authored and co-authored over 300 papers for scientific journals and teaches medical students and specialty residents.

Arno Lucas, Class of 1969, Pine Mountain, CA

Arno is a renowned professional musician and an extraordinary percussionist. Beginning at North with the Les Smith Soul Band, LA Carnival and Crackin,’ he continues to perform at the highest level after 40 years in the music business. He has toured with premier artists from Los Angeles to Japan, from New York City to London and many venues in between, always with the most positive vibe in the room.

Joy and Guy Oberg & Family, Friends of North High, Omaha, NE

Joy and Guy have been part of North athletics and extra-curricular activities for over 70 years. Their involvement began at North as students in the late 40’s. They continued to be avid supporters of their children at North High in the 60’s and 70’s and with their grandchildren who were active at North through 2006. Oberg Family children and grandchildren are also teachers and coaches at North, and a great-grandchild is currently a Viking. Their family’s dedication includes hosting football gameday dinners throughout the season for years and so much more. Although Guy passed away in 2011 and is greatly missed, the Oberg family continues to support their beloved Vikings!

David L. Underwood, Class of 1962, Omaha, NE

Dave was a high school educator and coach, and an Assistant Baseball Coach at UNL who went on to become the head baseball coach at Creighton University from 1980-1986. After leaving coaching, he created a successful commercial real estate company and in2005 co-founded Heritage Communities, assisted living facilities.

Faculty: Jan Christensen, 1992-2013, Omaha, NE

Jan was a math teacher and North High Curriculum Specialist who was the driving force behind the STEM curriculum at North High. She was also instrumental in the development and creation of the Haddix Center. Currently working for Omaha Public Schools at the Teachers Administration Center, she was the liaison for North’s recently built, state-of-the-art Robotics Lab. Jan serves on UNO and community boards and is still involved with North’s success in her retirement. 

North Star: Miguel Keith, LCpl USMC, Class of 1970

Lance Corporal Miguel Keith is a war hero who valiantly fought to protect his platoon in Vietnam and lost his life doing so in 1970, one year after he enlisted in the Marine Corp. He was awarded the Nation’s highest military honor, the MEDAL OF HONOR, for his courage, acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. A park in South Omaha, Miguel Keith Park, is named for him and the Navy has named a ship, the USNS Miguel Keith, for him.

2017

Randy Boldt, Class of 1963

Active in the Omaha community with such organizations as Madonna School and Boy Scouts, Boldt volunteers as an EMT and is active in the Nebraskaland Foundation. He retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska as its vice president.

Carolyn Nelson-Becker, Class of 1969

Living in Galveston, Texas, she retired as division chief and administrative director of the University of Texas Medical Branch’s Regional Maternal and Child Health Care Program. Interested in women’s health issues, she helped re-establish programs decimated by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Tim R. Riley, Class of 1972

He uses his Ph.D. as a clinical psychologist in the Behavioral Pediatric and Family Therapy Program in Lincoln. Riley has also served at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, counseled at the Omaha Home for Boys and given dozens of presentations and addresses throughout Nebraska.

Stanley W. Standifer, Class of 1966

He was an educator and coach in the Omaha Public Schools for over 30 years. A member of the Nebraska Black Sports Hall of Fame, he was recognized for his football talent at UNO and for coaching such sports as basketball and football.

Ellen Weissinger, Class of 1975

A professor of educational administration and emeritus senior vice chancellor at UNL, she worked on the committee to move the university into the Big Ten Conference. She managed the university’s academic budget, published 40 research articles and was given a Distinguished Teacher Award.

Faculty: Richard L. Briley, 1966-88

A veteran of World War II, he grew up in the foster care system. At North, he taught biology, chemistry, and physiology and anatomy and was a favorite teacher for many of his students.

Friends of North High School: Hazel and Sid C. Dillon Sr.

Quiet givers and benefactors to North High, the Dillons have given much wherever needed — from providing cars for many homecoming parades to supporting building projects.

2016

Steven R. Dunbar, Class of 1970, Lincoln, NE 
Professor of mathematics at UNL for 30 years (retired).  Steve served as founding director of the JD Edwards honors program in computer sciences (currently Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science).  Having earned a Ph.D. from Minnesota, he taught at the University of Utah and was a research  associate in Heidelberg, Germany.  He served as director of the MAA American Mathematics Competition and is the recipient of many teaching awards.

Gordon H. Miles, Class of 1958, Cardiff by the Sea, CA 
Gordon practiced law in Omaha from 1964-1979 after receiving his JD with honors from Creighton University.  He has served as chairman and CEO of several restaurant groups, purchasing a conglomerate from Ralston Purina and partnering with Paramount Pictures in founding the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurants.  He currently owns a grill in downtown San Diego, a brewery in La Jolla, and is a partner in the venture capital firm Gemini Investors. 

Monty Ross, Class of 1975, Atlanta, GA
A maker of films—producer, director, and actor—Monty served as vice president in charge of production with 40 Acres and a Mule, a production company of Spike Lee.  He has offered a new black movie experience by producing/co-producing such hits as School Days, Malcolm X, and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.  He also produced the advertising campaigns for Nike and Levi 501 jeans. A graduate of Morehouse College and Clark College in Atlanta, he is currently involved in working with underserved students interested in media technology and filmmaking.

Penny D. Sackett, Classof 1974, Canberra, New South Wales, Australia
Internationally acclaimed as a physicist, astronomer, and former chief scientist for Australia, Penny was part of a global network that discovered the first Earth-sized planet orbiting a star other than Earth’s sun.  She was named Australia’s Chief Scientist, has worked in the Netherlands, and is on the Nobel Laureate Symposium.  Possessing a worldwide reputation, she is a consultant and was honored recently as an outstanding alumna by UNO.

Quiana M. Smith, Class of 1995, New York, NY
Quiana is both an actress and singer and theatre educator who took her talents to Broadway after earning a BFA degree from Ithaca College Musical Theater.  She has appeared in all major venues, sang at a Presidential inauguration, spent three years with the Disney production of Mary Poppins, and has been a guest soloist with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. Her mother, Llana Jones Smith, was inducted into the Vikings of Distinction in 2022.

Friend of North High School: Niles Paul, Class of 2007, Ashburn, VA
Niles Paul continues to give back to North High and the Viking football team.  Niles was a standout player for the Nebraska Cornhuskers; and in 2011, he went on to play tight end in the NFL for Washington.  He brings recognition to Omaha North not only through his generosity toward Viking football but by mentoring North’s football team.  His family was also a primary fund raiser for a North High Foundation Scholarship recognizing a North staff volunteer.

2015

Ronald B. Cooley, Class of 1967, Omaha, NE
An accomplished gold and platinum record award-winning guitarist, bassist, and lutist, Ron has been with the acclaimed Mannheim Steamroller for 35 years. He was an adjunct faculty member in the music departments at many universities, as well as an instructor for the Cathedral Arts Project Jazz Workshops. In the 1970’s he was the guitarist for C. W. McCall.

Micah Laaker, Class of 1993, Mountain View, CA
Micah’s journey from North High to his current post at Google has mirrored his passions. His career has involved everything from board games to technical manuals, from music videos to mobile apps. His career in technology has been highlighted with leadership roles at Def Jam Records, Yahoo!, and Graphicly prior to joining Google.

Mike McGee, Class of 1977, Omaha, NE
As the Omaha World Herald Athlete of the Year in 1977, Mike’s basketball
talents took him from North High to the University of Michigan. He then went onto play nine seasons in the NBA playing for the L.A. Lakers, Hawks, Kings, Nets and Suns and later for France and Italy in European leagues. He has also coached in China.

Dwight L. and Marleen Morgan, Class of 1962, Milwaukee, WI
Friend of North High School Award – Dwight and Marleen were high school sweethearts at North High. Now they are being honored for their commitment to North High and their exceptional support of the NHS Foundation and its scholarships to NHS students. They have been actively involved in their Milwaukee community. Dwight is the Senior Vice-President of Human Resources at Wisconsin’s Aurora Health Care. Marlene has been a very successful educator.

Lance G. Morgan, Class of 1986, Winnebago, NE
After earning his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1993, Morgan launched Ho-Chunk, Inc., an economic development corporation for the Winnebago Tribe. In July, 2014, he received the Advocate of the Year Award by the Minority Business Development Agency of the U. S. Department of Commerce.

Judith A. Wells, Class of 1968, Omaha, NE
A graduate of Creighton School of Law, Judith has her own practice and is also an Independent Attorney Contractor with Omaha’s Housing Authority. She is involved with the EEO Network as a GSA Contractor and as a Final Agency Decision Writer for the US Post Office. Active in her community, she is committed to civil rights and to equal opportunity for all.

2014

Dick Christie, Class of 1966, Albuquerque, NM

Formerly Richard L. Johnson, Class of 1966. Hollywood actor, writer, and director. Dick’s career started on the stage of North High and moved on to UNO, acting in many local Omaha community stages and dinner theatres. Taking his talent to L.A. in 1980, he would, as he said, “get lucky” as actor Dick Christie. He starred in FOX’s first sitcom, Small Wonder, and had many more roles in television and feature films over the past 33 years. He has been a featured guest-star on top-rated television series such as Hart to Hart, Eight is Enough and Newhart, amongst others. Dick also was on the cast of The Bold and The Beautiful on CBS.

Robert D. Greenlee, Class of 1959, Lafayette, CO

Bobʼ’s entrepreneurial spirit has led him to become a successful restauranteur, advertising executive, radio station owner, casino developer, microbrewery developer, a Boulder, Colorado City Councilman and the Mayor in 1998-99. He and his wife Diane are dynamic civic leaders and philanthropists and made possible the development of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University named in their honor. He is dedicated to providing excellent educational opportunities for children through programs they have established such as the “I Have a Dream” project they brought to Boulder, Colorado.

Bruce D. Hunter, Class of 1991, Evanston, IL

Bruce is a graduate of Norfolk State University and Emory University School of Law. Currently, he is an attorney with the Law office of Bruce D. Hunter P.C. L.L.O. in Evanston, IL. He is a member of the Urban League Young Professionals and in 2013 ran for the District 2 seat on the Omaha City Council. He is interested in providing jobs and opportunities for those in the inner city, enhancing green technology, and providing jobs through urban farming. He is dedicated to lowering crime in our communities and improving education for all children.

Ron Kaplan, Class of 1959, Omaha, NE

Ron’s creative flair led him to be a founding partner in Smith Kaplan Allen and Reynolds Advertising Agency, now SKAR. Beginning in 1963, the agency gained a national reputation for its work; at the time of Ronʼ s retirement in 2000, the agency had not only grown but was one of the largest in the region. His civic involvement includes service on numerous community boards. Ron was also the recipient of many awards in writing and producing advertisements within his industry, was made a Lifetime Member of the Omaha Federation of Advertising, and in 1999 was honored by the American Advertising Federation with their highest award–the prestigious Silver Medal–for service to the community and his industry.

Michael L. Mench, Class of 1963, LaFayette, CO

Mike attended UNO earning degrees in English Literature and Criminal Justice. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a member of the Personal Security Detachment responsible for the safety of General Creighton W. Abrams, Commander of the U.S. Military in Vietnam. Being an expert rifleman, he has served on SWAT teams and has also served various Police and Sheriff’s departments across the country. Mike was a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Los Angeles, CA, from 1978- 1996 and in Denver, CO, from 1996 to 2001. He has been a senior level investigator experienced in complex criminal investigations and a team leader involved in operational and tactical missions. He is also a dedicated volunteer with the USO at the Denver International Airport, and other community service endeavors protecting others.

Friend of North High: Christie A. Jensen Gehringer, Omaha, NE, Class of 1961

Christie is an outstanding volunteer at North High Magnet School, committed to the improvement and support of her alma mater. Since 2010, Christie has served as President of the Omaha North High School Foundation and writes the alumni newsletter. She was actively involved with the Viking Voyage, the Foundationʼ s fund-raising campaign for North High’s 90th Anniversary in the fall of 2014. She served on the Vikings of Distinction Committee and was a past Committee Chairman, video and program writer and past chairman of the selection committee, as well as her Class of 1961 reunion committee. Christie was a teacher for 33 years for the Omaha Public Schools. She is also an active member of AAUW, the Danish American Archive & Library, and Trinity Lutheran Church.

2013

James R. Duffack, Class of 1960, Omaha, NE

A love for cars, fast and fun, led to his 40-year business success story in Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa. He advanced from his 1947 Chevy Fleetline hotrod, that he fixed up, to his first used car lot, Duffack Car Sales. Jim went on to own his Toyota dealership in the Bluffs. He built an award winning business based on excellent performance, operating standards, and customer satisfaction. His love of collector cars has led to his amazing personal collection! Jim enjoys giving back to the community through the many charities that he supports.

Lorna Fischer Ruebelmann, Class of 1961, Silver City, NM

She excelled in a long career in public administration in Wyoming where she held a variety of positions. From being Energy Conservation Director for the State, and President of Wind River Consulting solar planning, she became the Wyoming Democratic Party Executive Director, and State Labor Standards Compliance Officer. Lornaʼ’s community efforts center around a foundation for hospice care in Tanzania and Colorado, Rotary Exchange Programs and she was the technical director for an award winning Council for the Humanities Program, “That Gold Mine in the Sky.”

Erna Nickelsen Clanton, Class of 1937, Omaha, NE

A lifetime of music performance, including directing and mentoring young people and she is now introducing music therapy to senior citizens! Erna’s extensive music training and great musical gifts raised the musical consciousness of several generations. From the lead alto soloist with the Omaha Symphony to church choir director for 45 years to founder of bell choirs, she now shares her talents for making beautiful music at the Immanuel Village.

Donald J. Parrish, Class of 1961, Winter Park, FL

A 40-year career in the military began with his West Point graduation in 1965. Retiring as a US Army Lieutenant Colonel, he taught and served in many venues around the world. He served in Vietnam as a battery commander, and as a mathematics professor at West Point, and after US Naval Postgraduate School in Operations Research and Systems Analysis, he took on other complex duties. Don was awarded a Bronze Star among many awards. He is active in skiing, Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity.

Ron A. Sayers, Class of 1965, San Diego, CA

After graduating from UNO where he played football, he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers. Leaving the NFL after an injury, he obtained masters and advanced degrees in Educational Counseling at San Diego State University and he has devoted his life to working with children. As a school psychologist, a career counselor and coach, he has had an impact on hundreds of studentsʼ  lives over the years. Ron’s commitment to education and young people extend into his church and community.

Faculty: Edward T. Reed, 1961-1996

He was a French teacher extraordinaire beginning in 1961, Department Head of Foreign Languages in 1975, curriculum specialist from 1979 until retirement in 1996, as well as the magnet school’s recruitment director. He served as Assistant Athletic Director from 1982-1996 among many other leadership positions. Ed was a member of the Vikings of Distinction Committee from 1983-2011 and an original member of the Omaha North High School Foundation. He has been active in swimming and golf all of his life, an expert on the WWII Flying Tigers, and a world traveler. Ed Reed was an exceptional teacher, mentor, leader and always a tremendous advocate for Omaha North High Magnet School.

2012

Geneva (Scott) Dourisseau, Class of 1968

The General Director of Labor Relations for the Union Pacific Railroad since 1980, she is also active in her community. Some of her community involvement includes work with the Urban League, UPRR Black Employees Network, and the Omaha Public Schools. She has also been a teacher and a summer youth program coordinator.

Thomas W. Hejkal, M.D., Class of 1969

Currently a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, this much publicized researcher is the Chairman of Ophthalmology and Visual Services. Professional organizations to which he belongs include the Omaha Ophthalmological Society, serving as its president since 1998. A Ph.D. in Oceanography is one of his accomplishments.

Theodore (Ted) Sanko, Class of 1962

Residing in Norton, Kansas, he is the owner of several local businesses. Active in his community, he works with such organizations as the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. His military service consisted of a tour in Vietnam as an officer with the Army Corp of Engineers. Upon his return, he worked for the U.S. Department of Justice as a special agent with the FBI.

Ted J. Stouffer, Class of 1960

A practicing attorney for 38 years, he tried more than 1500 cases in Nebraska and Iowa prior to retiring. He is a member of a number of professional organizations, has served on the boards of the Omaha Softball Association and North High School Foundation, and has fulfilled his quest of playing every golf course in Nebraska.

Aileen (Hopgood) Warren, Class of 1979

A Human Resources professional, she is Vice President of Human Resources at First Data Corporation. She serves on a number of boards, among them, Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, Catholic Charities, American Red Cross, Family Services, and Girls, Inc. In 2009 she received the National Service to Youth award from the Boys ,and Girls Club of America.

Friend of North High: Dave and Carol Van Metre

The Van Metres have long shown their interest in and support of the Omaha Public Schools. Their support to Omaha North High Magnet School can be found in the Viking girls’ softball field with its new building for restrooms, concessions, and supplies built in 2010 and similar improvements in the boys’ baseball fields in 2011. The updated and outfitted weight room at North, along with those in all Omaha high schools and middle schools, is because of their generosity.

Roger H. Baumgart, Class of 1966

Current CEO of Home Instead Senior Care, the world’s first and largest senior care company. He has a lifetime of small business, entrepreneurial, franchise and community service experiences. He serves on national committees for health care reform and in leadership positions on boards locally and nationally.

Gaylen K. Hargrave, Class of 1949

Mechanical engineer with Allison Division of GM developing the turbo jet engine. From 1955-64 with the Army Corps of Engineers, he focused on the Atlas Missile Base construction. He was Chief of the Mechanical Engineering Division of NASA at the Johnson Space Center from 1964 to 1981. After retirement in ‘81, he became a consulting engineer.

George H. Lauritsen, Class of 1941

An engineer for Northwestern Bell and then recruited by Western Electric to work on two early warning radar systems during the “Cold War” period. President of the Omaha Council of Telephone Pioneers and with his wife, Dona, helped establish the nation’s first support group for amputees. He has had a lifetime of service to his country.

Professor emerita, California State University at Los Angeles. Former President of the CA Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Made pioneering strides in physical education as a teacher, professor, director and author across all ability levels.

Brenda J. Smith, Class of 1974

The first woman Deputy Chief of Police of the Omaha Police Department after rising through the ranks from 1980-1993. A community college instructor and member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board as well as many community and philanthropic endeavors. She conducted training for federal agencies and other police departments and businesses across the country.

Douglas Cody, Class of 1972

Emmy-winning writer, producer and a Vice President of Omaha’s SKAR Advertising joined Creative Services at Walt Disney World where he wrote and produced advertising, TV programs, and management speeches. He went on to become head of Corporate Communications for multi-billion dollar international hospitality leader, Carlson Companies.

Virginia Wheeler Stuart, Class of 1943

Secretarial support for several companies, 1943 to 1954, and volunteer coordinator. One of the first five founders of Omaha Botanical Gardens and has given 150 speeches and 18,000 hours and developed newsletter and volunteer program. Active in many community groups.
